Robert Garay, the Tool Man, shows one of his many hammers to an audience at the Evangelical Free Church in Blairstown.
Once upon a time an ancient man named Grock picked up a rock and smashed a rabbit with it. Meat! Of course, he had to wait a million years or so before fire came along so he could cook it, but he was set as far as finding an effective tool for hunting goes.
Robert Garay, called "The Tool Man" by some, recently spoke to the Primetimers group of the Evangelical Free Church of Blairstown about the history of the hammer. He told them it all started with a rock. His audience listened as he brought out a wide array of hammers, from dainty jewelers' tools to cowboy fence fixers.
Man's first hammer was simply a rock held in his fist. Thousands of years passed before he invented the compound tool -- attaching a handle to the rock and thus gaining leverage.
